PRACTICE STAFF

Reception

This is usually your first point of contact with the health centres. The receptionists at Seascale are Pippa, Olga, Kath, Adele and Edna; the receptionists at Bootle are Marie and Kayleigh. The receptionists are responsible for answering the telephone, dealing with enquiries, organising appointments, arranging transport, acting as liaison between yourself and the doctors and ensuring the smooth running of the appointment and registration systems. They have the difficult job of managing your expectations with the available health providers and appointments. As a patient please try and be patient!

Always advise reception you have arrived when coming for an appointment and please contact them to cancel an appointment, advise you cannot make that particular time or that you are running late.

It is important that you advise reception if you change your address.

Training

As an approved training practice, at different times we will have student nurses, midwives, health visitors and doctors. We also have GP registrars who are qualified doctors undergoing specific GP training.

You will be advised that these 'trainees' are in place and asked if you are willing to see them. Please help by agreeing to be seen by them but do not hesitate in declining if you would feel uncomfortable. A suitably qualified person will supervise these 'trainees' as appropriate.

The health centres and dispensary will be closed one afternoon a month for staff training. During this time calls are dealt with by CHOC. The dates of this training will be notified in advance.

Practice Manager

The practice manager, Jayne Blinco, will be able to help with any administrative or non-medical problems. We also welcome any practicable suggestions on how we can improve our service. To make a suggestion you can make a note in the comments book, complete a suggestion slip, or speak to reception or to the practice manager.

In the case of serious complaints we have a complaints procedure that the practice manager will guide you through. Each complaint will be investigated and a response given to you. Patients should be assured they will not be treated any differently should they make a complaint.

Medical Secretaries

Frances and Nic deal with all correspondence to hospitals re: referrals, waiting lists, medicals etc. Any queries on these issues should be directed to them by telephoning 019467 78210 / 78213.

Nurse Practitioner

She can do most things a GP can, for examplediagnose, arrange diagnostics, refer and prescribe, so please make appointments with her if you wish.

Practice Nurses

The practice nurses are:

Marion Thornton SRN SCM
Annette Barker SEN RGN Family Planning
Christine McComb SRN
Charlotte Stanley SRN RSCN
Sally Mitchell RGN
Hazel Matanle RGN BSc (Hons)

Katy McAvoy RGN

The Seascale practice nurses also supervise the health care assistant, Susan Dawson, who has her own list of patients each morning for routine procedures.

ATTACHED STAFF

The practice also has the following attached staff who are employed by the NHS but are allocated part or all of their time with us.

Health Visitor

The health visitor is concerned with the promotion of health and prevention of ill health by the provision of education, advice and support. They are also particularly concerned with the health and well-being of children. They run baby and immunisation clinics.

Please ask reception for the times of the clinics and when the health visitor is available at either surgery.

Community Midwife

The midwife holds antenatal clinics by appointment with reception. You do not need to see a doctor before seeing the midwife. To contact the midwife just ring reception.

Along with the health visitor the midwife runs a weekly Breast Feeding Support Group in the area.

Community (District) Nurses

As part of the primary care group the community nurses work alongside the doctors, health visitor, social workers, practice nurse and Macmillan nurses. They provide a nursing service for the housebound so it can be very frustrating for them to visit a patient to find they have gone shopping or to the hairdressers! If a patient can participate in these types of activities they are able to come or be brought into the surgery for treatment. These nurses have a very large case-load so please don’t expect their services if you are not truly housebound. During normal opening hours the community nurses can be contacted through reception.

A 24 hour district nurse service is not yet available but there is an extended evening service operating between 5.00pm and midnight via CHOC. To contact a community nurse in the evening, weekends or bank holidays ring the normal health centre number 019467 28101; when connected to CHOC ask for the community nurse. You can contact CHOC directly on 01228 401999.

Other Health Care Professionals

Our doctors may refer you to other health care professionals for treatment eg speech therapy, dietician, physiotherapy*, smoking cessation*, podiatry, mental health counselling and drug/alcohol counselling.

* You can also self-register for thes. Contact reception for details.
