Measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

Barbara runs independent clinical sessions alongside the GPs. She can do most things a GP can i.e., diagnose, arrange diagnostics, refer and prescribe so please make appointments with her if you wish

Some of our nurses support specialist disease clinics and others assist GPs with Minor operations, minor injuries, and provide travel vaccinations, routine blood sampling and dressing changes. Our two Health Care Assistants are Susan Dawson and Suzanne Cameron. They can provide patients with health promotion screening and advice.

The practice manager will be able to help with any organisational or non-medical problems. We welcome patient’s views of their experience (good and not so good) and value any practicable suggestions on how we can improve our service. To make a suggestion you can make a note in the comments book, complete a suggestion slip, or speak to whomever you feel most comfortable with, we are all happy to help.

Frances and Nicola deal with all correspondence to hospitals re: referrals, waiting lists, medicals etc. Any queries on these issues should be directed to them by telephoning 019467 78210/78213.

Community Midwives

The midwife holds antenatal clinics by appointment with reception. You do not need to see a doctor before seeing the midwife. To contact the midwife just ring reception. Along with the health visitor, the midwife runs a weekly Breast Feeding Support Group in the area.

Community Nurses

As part of the Copeland Community Services team the community nurses at Seascale work alongside the doctors, health visitor, social workers, practice nurse and Macmillan nurses. Some of our community nurses also work in the practice treatment room. The community nurses provide a nursing service for the housebound patient. Whilst we recognise the need for housebound patients to leave the home occasionally, please try to be available for their visits or inform them if you plan to be out. If a patient is able to be transported to the surgery this will help free up more time for the community nurses to visit housebound patients who are unable to visit the practice. During normal opening hours the community nurses can be contacted through reception. A 24-hour community nurse service is not yet available but there is an extended evening service operating between 5.00pm and midnight via CHOC. To contact them in the evening, weekends or bank holidays ring the normal health centre number 01946 728101; when connected to CHOC ask for the community nurse. You can also contact CHOC directly on 03000 247 247.

Health Visitors

The health visitor is concerned with the promotion of health and prevention of ill health by the provision of education, advice and support. They are particularly concerned with the health and well-being of babies and children. They run baby and immunisation clinics. Please ask reception for the times of the clinics and when the health visitor is available at either surgery.

Attached Staff

Our doctors may refer you to other health care professionals for treatment e.g. speech and language therapy, dietician, physiotherapy, smoking cessation, podiatry, mental health counseling and drug/alcohol counseling. You can now self refer to smoking cessation, podiatry and physiotherapy, please contact reception for information.
