These websites will give you general information about the country you are visiting, vaccine recommendations, malaria treatment and also any other important information.
Once you know what vaccines you may need, please check if you have already had them or require a booster vaccine. This can be done by contacting the surgery reception desk or viewing your immunisations in your online medical record (please speak to reception if you wish to view your medical record online)
Please complete Pre-Travel Questionnaire and hand into reception at least 8 weeks before departure.
A telephone appointment can then be arranged with the Practice Nurse to discuss the vaccines that you may need. Please be aware that there may be a charge for some vaccines (see bottom for price list).
For these vaccines, practices are required to consider 2 aspects; Indication and Administration.
Indication is the advice bit, which in many areas is a private service (i.e. in a Travel health clinic) or this can be a patient’s own evidence that they have received advice to have the immunisation i.e. following the recommendations from the travel advice website (please bring this with you to the appointment so that our nurses can verify).
Administration of the vaccine is counselling about the process, risks and effects and contraindications as well as giving the jab or the medication. All other services including Medication supply are private (to be paid for) and therefore in addition to NHS services. * The legal stuff – Under our NHS contract, our responsibility is only to provide the following NHS vaccines: Cholera, Hepatitis A, paratyphoid, poliomyelitis, smallpox and typhoid.
If a private prescription is required the nurse will generate this for you, however the vaccine must be paid for before the vaccine is ordered.
It is important to make this initial telephone appointment as early as possible – at least 8 weeks before you travel – as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
